When trauma shows up as clutter

Updated: Aug 15

I recently interviewed Nicolette Tomaszewski on my podcast. Nicolette is a trauma therapist and mindset coach. I wanted to invite her onto the podcast after I saw one of her posts on Instagram about trauma responses and a lot of what she said looked like what I see with some of my clients. Since we are both informed on trauma (in life and from our work), it was a great opportunity to have an honest discussion about how trauma shows up in our lives, especially in the form of clutter or an inability to move forward with decluttering.

In this episode, we discuss the following trauma responses and how they relate to the things we hold onto:

  • Perfectionism

  • Procrastination

  • Shame/shame spirals

  • Freeze response

  • Doing things the "right" way

  • People pleasing

  • Attachments to ways of thinking

  • Accumulation/value attachment

We also ask you to consider the stories around your attachments when sorting your stuff. And Nicolette gives some great takeaways for when you want to start decluttering (that will sound familiar if you have heard me discuss this in the past).

This episode is perfect for you if you have ever wondered why you are holding onto some items; you have family members who have difficulty decluttering; you know you have a history of trauma and want to see how that might impact the items in your home; and honestly for anyone who knows they have attachments to items.
